Asbestos in Soil

The measurement of asbestos in soils is a requirement for occupational exposure and the determination of removal, disposal or soil re-use. To meet regulatory requirements, soil samples need to be assessed to identify if asbestos is present (qualification), type determination and in what quantity (quantification).

The latest UKAS accreditation recognises that formal training, qualifications and documented procedures are in place to ensure the consistent and accurate analysis of all samples.

Asbestos can find its way into soils via the historic demolition of buildings containing ACMs and fly tipped waste.

Asbestos Regulations require employers to assess any potential exposure to asbestos faced by employees. Environment Agency regulations require that the quantification of asbestos in soils is determined so that an assessment can be made in relation to hazardous waste handling arrangements and human health risk assessments.
